Annual Children's Camp

10-13-Year-Olds – You Have Been Chosen to Join Our tribe!  The Survivor Children's Camp is a must-do event for 2019.

  • Monday 23rd September 9.30am – Thursday 26th September 10.00am 2019

  • QCCC Mapleton, 70 Obi Obi Road, Mapleton

Action packed outdoor activities include the flying fox, archery, canoeing and team challenges. All activates are accessible.

The SBH Queensland childrens camp supports children with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus, aged 10-13 years. The camp features fun activities, friendships, SBH Queensland therapists (OT, Physio, SLP), nurses, social workers, teachers and volunteers.

Children get together with others who share some of the same issues, to learn from each other, challenge themselves by trying new things in a safe and supportive environment and work on some personal goals in relation to independence, both physical and emotional.

The objectives of the camp are to provide a fun and stimulating environment for students to:

  • develop independence in daily tasks - wheelchair skills, transfers, personal hygeine, dressing, organisational skills

  • allow students to experience new activities and broaden their horizons

  • improve self-esteem and self-confidence

  • develop language and communication skills

  • improve social and team skills

  • better understand their disability and their specific health and personal care needs.

Special Note - Unfortunately, Children’s Camp is no longer supported under the NSO grant program. Traditionally, children’s camp has been a free community program. Due to a restructure of the government NSO grant program, SBH Queensland and similar organisations will no longer be funded for our independence camps. Despite this, SBH Queensland is passionate to continue this wonderful experience for children.

Moving forward, it is critical to integrate the Children’s Camp into your child’s NDIS plan. Please download the Children’s Camp NDIS flyer (including NDIS line items, program goals and outcomes) to take to your NDIS planner.

Wish I had been there to thank you all and everyone else who contributed to the camp. Sarah absolutely loved her time and has so many stories. She is so disappointed it is her last year and they are have already started planning a reunion lol!
It is such an amazing opportunity for them to get together in a safe environment where they share a common yet individual thread and get to have time aware from us.
Thank you again and I know if you ever plan another camp for 14-17 year olds we would definitely use Sarah’s NDIS funding (if allocated) to attend. I know staff at SBH invest more time and energy than in your job description. It means so much to the kids and we really appreciate it!
